Montecchia. Godimondo Carmenere 2007

Producer: Conte Emo Capodilista

Region: , Veneto, Italy

Category: Wine

Colour/Type: Red

Tasting Note:

Star anise and pepper, brooding damson and bramble, a joy to just smell.  Beautifully woven complex elements of spice, berry, mint, mushroom and smoke all built around a mineral core.  An assured wine and in my opinion the best wine that Giordano has released.

Grape: Carmenère;

Vinification:

A clone that has been in the vineyards for as long as anyone can remember from which clonal selections have been taken over the years.

Confusingly, Cabernet Franc has had DOC status in the Colli Euganei, but the authorities allowed Carmenere to be called Cabernet Franc which meant most of the Cabernet Franc production of the region was Carmenere, there you go; clear as mud! The regulations were ammended this year, I am not sure of the exact changes but suffice to say Carmenere is now an approved IGT Veneto varietal and is becoming popular, these hills along with those of the Colli Berici are world class sites for the vines.  Great wines have already been made and I expect many more will follow.
