Majolini
Lombardy
Emma had a glass of ‘Electo’ in Aqua Petrarche, the decision was simple and when we discovered that same wine had been awarded 'Three Glasses', we hid any prejudice and visited anyway.
Majolini is regarded as a top up and coming producer of Franciacorta, an old wine family whose wines are a recent phenomenon and they had never exported to England.
The estate is controlled and owned by the Majolini family. Simone (a law graduate, who saw the light) is at the helm with his uncle Ezio, they have made huge investments in both the vineyards and cellar.
As with all great estates the vineyards come first, these are on a very fine limestone in excellent hillside positions. The production to around 120,000 bottles a year.
The spumante wines are made by the 'Traditional Method' (how Champagne is made) with Chardonnay the dominant vine, sometimes a no- no for me, however these are fantastic, and I look forward to sending them to the journalists.
The Ronchello is a fine white made from a vineyard of the same name, it is a non vintage wine, the weaker 2002 vintage is supported by the fine 2001, it’s a pity more producers don’t have the guts to de-classify their wines to ensure genuine quality.
The Ruc di Gnoc is a really well put together wine; Bordeaux meets Piemonte, unlikely and excellent.
